Cultural vacations in Tuscany with a view towards Orciatico’s windmill ruins, ancient buildings a few minutes away from our apartments in Lajatico.

Casa d’Era, holiday home in the province of Pisa, recommends its guests to visit this suggestive location, unique among local cultural landmarks, during their Tuscany vacations. Visitors can reach it while going trekking, on a horseback or bicycle ride.

Both got erected in the XVIIIth century, originally powered by water streams, but due to the area’s low river flow and the need for them to work constantly, they got repurposed later to function on wind power. These venues of great cultural importance were in use until the early 1900s.

Constructed on top of a hill to make the most of gales, they have a 4 mts diameter and are 17 meters high.

The structures are divided in two levels, the lower one was used as a storage room, the upper level hosted the mills, equipped with wooden machinery in order to perform as required. A skilled miller was essential to set the outer sails depending on weather conditions.
